Mahinda Rajapaksa is the 13th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. He also holds three ministerial portfolios of Finance, Buddhasasana, Religious & Cultural Affairs, and Urban Development & Housing.

Mahinda Rajapaksa first served as Prime Minister in 2004 and was then elected the 5th President of Sri Lanka in 2005. His leadership in defeating the terrorism of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) played a major role in his reelection as President in 2010.

Mahinda Rajapaksa was first elected to Parliament in 1970, becoming the country’s youngest Member of Parliament. Throughout his 50-year political career, he has also held ministerial portfolios of Labour & Vocational Training and Fisheries, served as Leader of the Opposition, and held chairmanships of SAARC, G15 and Commonwealth Chair-in-Office. Most recently, Prime Minister Rajapaksa was elected Chair of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Board of Governors.

Mahinda Rajapaksa was born on November 18, 1945, the second son in a family of six brothers and three sisters. From early years, he was brought up in the Sinhala-Buddhist tradition. He first schooled at Richmond College in the southern city of Galle, where his father, uncle and cousins, who also entered politics, were first schooled. His education later shifted to Nalanda College and Thurstan College in Colombo. He studied law at the Colombo Law College and qualified as an Attorney-at-Law, taking oaths in 1977.

Mahinda Rajapaksa is married to Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa, and they have three sons—Namal, Yoshitha and Rohitha—and two grandchildren
